This is my favorite dark background and the best thing is that I can make more when I need it. Each strip of wool starts out as a different color so when they come out of the dye pot, they are all different. The colors will vary based on when they are dyed but you can add more and keep going -- just like sour dough starter.

Use this wool to hook flowers that just glow. Separate the colors and you have the beginning of a wonderful color pallette. This wool has a very large repeat. The photo spans most of the way from selvedge to the fold.

Cut this wool in different directions for different looks. Use the several different values to hook a flower. Every rug needs purple, right?

This is not a boring brown. When you look closely there are all sorts of color. Good for a dark value of animals or for a background.

Notice the two sides of this wool. You can change it even further by cutting it with or across the stripes. Overdye it and you have several values of wool. Incredibly versatile.

This wool has become one of my favorite blue background wools. The subtle lines of color sparkle when the rug is in the right light but are soft enough so that they don't detract from the motifs.

Christmas has been my favorite red wool since I discovered it. The original one was a British wool that was stringy unless you washed it multiple time. This one has slightly duller colors but the weave of the wool makes it a joy to hook.

Linen is a popular choice among rug hookers. This one is extra wide at 64" instead of 60." The threads per inch, 12 x 12, is best for primitive cuts. Unbleached. This photo appears lighter than it really is. Order the number of yards you want. I will come in one piece that many yards long and 64" wide.

Rug warp is my backing of choice. 60" cotton. Threads per inch 11 x 13. I routinely hook wide cuts in this backing. If you have animals this is the backing to use. The loops are much more secure.
